First Fruits

by Natasha Sykes

Proverbs 3:8-9 (Ampflied)

“Honor the Lord with your capital and sufficiency from righteous labors and with the firstfruits of all your income; so shall your storage places be filled with plenty, and your vats shall be overflowing with new wine.”

The Hebrew word for honor here is kabed, which means to be heavy, to be wealthy, to be glorified.  As entrepreneurs, we truly have the privilege to honor God with the income that comes from our businesses.  The question is this:  are we really honoring God with our offerings?

We often quote this scripture, but we need to look at our end of the covenant.  When we give to God, does it bring Him honor? Is it heavy, or is it important to us?  I guarantee that every gift we have given to someone that was expensive or precious to us, we remember.  Do we remember the offerings that we bring to God each Sunday and Wednesday?  Was it memorable?  Did it give Him glory?  Did we give out of love or obligation? In the message translation of II Samuel 24:24, David said, “I'm not going to offer GOD my God, sacrifices that are no sacrifice."  We must remember that every time we bring an offering, it is just that:  AN OFFERING.  Just because we offer something doesn’t mean that it is accepted; we need to make sure our heart is right, and that we are honoring God with our offering.  We must be doers of the Word and not hearers only.  When we begin to truly honor God with our best, and give from our heart, then we can expect the end of our faith:  Our storage places filled with plenty!
